Save Innocent Creatures from Animal Abusers

Target: Rick Scott, Governor of Florida

Goal: Protect animals by preventing convicted animal abusers from being able to adopt or buy pets.

People convicted of animal cruelty often become repeat offenders of this crime yet are still allowed to buy or adopt animals, but a new bill introduced in Florida could help stop this and save the lives of countless innocent creatures. Urge officials to pass this bill to ensure these inhumane criminals are no longer allowed to own and abuse animals.

State representatives Jared Moskowitz and Blaise Ingoglia proposed the bipartisan bill, HB871, which would create a public registry of people convicted of animal abuse. The bill would also require that pet stores, shelters and breeders check the registry before selling an animal or giving up a pet for adoption, with an imposed fine for those who fail to do so.

While rescuing animals from abusive situations is incredibly important, this bill provides an opportunity to be proactive in the fight against animal cruelty by keeping dangerous perpetrators away from these creatures. Urge officials to stand up for defenseless animals by supporting the legislation to create an animal abuse registry and ensuring that it is used.

PETITON LETTER:

Dear Governor Scott,

It should be common sense to keep animal abusers away from innocent creatures, but for whatever reason this is not currently the case. However, a new bill proposed in the Florida House of Representatives would change that by creating an animal abuse registry and requiring that the registry is checked before any animal is sold or adopted.

The creation of this registry would help pet stores, shelters and breeders to stop sales or adoptions to people who are known animal abusers and who are likely to commit animal cruelty again. It is vital that we take proactive steps to improve animal welfare and not just reactive measures. I urge you to support this bill and help it get signed into law.

Sincerely,
