Target: Nikki Haley, U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations
Goal: Keep the U.S. within the United Nations Human Rights Council so that it can continue to work toward human rights protections for men, women, and children around the world.
The Trump administration is considering withdrawing the United States from the United Nations Human Rights Council. The council works toward protecting the human rights of men, women, and children around the world, leading investigations into abuses and war crimes.
The Trump Administration cites the council’s treatment of Israel as its reasoning for leaving, in addition to the presence of China and Saudi Arabia on the council, two nations that have infringed on their citizens’ human rights. Similar reasoning was used by the Bush Administration when it refused to join the council.
However, as the Obama Administration argued when it joined the council, the United States can make more of a difference from inside of the council than it can do outside of it. Sign the petition and demand that the U.S. remain in the Human Rights Council and continue to fight for the rights of the world’s at-risk citizens.
Dear Ambassador Haley,
Reports have recently surfaced that state the United States is considering withdrawing its participation from the United Nations Security Council. While there are issues with the council, such as the human rights abuses of its own member nations, remaining in the council will do more good for the world than abandoning it.
The United States remains an influential nation. It has a better chance of cooperating with troubled nations and influencing human rights policies if it remains a member than it does if it abandons its partnership and breaks off on its own. I ask that you advocate for the U.S.’s continued participation in the Human Rights Council.
