Drop False Charges Against Filipino Political Activist

Target: Vitaliano Aguirre II, Justice Secretary of the Philippines

Goal: Drop false charges against former senator, political activist, and opponent of Filipino President Rodrigo Duterte.

Former Filipino senator Leila de Lima, a political activist and opponent of President Rodrigo Duterte’s violent crackdown on drug trafficking, has been arrested on false charges of accepting bribery from drug traffickers. These charges, she argues, are false and are simply being used as revenge against her for her stance against the president and his “war on drugs,” which has caused the death of thousands.

If she is convicted, de Lima may spend the rest of her life in prison. She has been one of the most vocal opponents of the president, who has violated human rights since he has taken office less than a year ago. De Lima has previously launched investigations into the president’s violent anti-drug campaigns, for which she has been personally attacked and blackmailed by the president.

The charges brought against her and her subsequent arrest are based on no evidence whatsoever and instead seem to only be a means of silencing any opposition to President Duterte. If de Lima is charged, it will shake the foundation of justice in the Philippines. With no viable evidence, sign the petition and demand that charges be dropped against de Lima. She has spent her entire career fighting against human rights violations and should not be silenced.

PETITITION LETTER:

Dear Secretary Aguirre,

I find it highly troubling that former senator Leila de Lima has been arrested for corruption with very little evidence of any wrongdoing. Ms. De Lima has been a politician who has fought for the rights of Filipino citizens, even when it put her in direct opposition to the nation’s president, who seems to have taken every opportunity he can to attack and discredit her.

If convicted, the very foundation of the justice system in the Philippines will be shaken to its core and forever be made unstable. Opposition should not be silenced or locked behind bars. To do so only proves that the government has something to hide and be ashamed of. Ms. De Lima has done nothing but fight to protect her fellow citizens. I demand that you release her and allow her to continue this fight.

Sincerely,

  1. Please free Leila de Lima, who has had the COURAGE and COMPASSION to speak out and speak the truth about the horrible atrocities that Duterte is committing in the Philippines. She should be commended for her human rights work, not charged and imprisoned.
