Don’t Let Immigrant Woman Die Without Life-Saving Surgery

Target: Thomas Homan, Acting Director of ICE

Goal: Release ‘Sara’ into the care of medical professionals and allow her to receive critical brain surgery for brain tumor.

Diagnosed with a brain tumor, Sara was undergoing treatment before she was arrested at a hospital by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) Agents. She allegedly had her arms and ankles bound and was transferred to the Prairieland Detention Center. Since then, her condition has worsened and she has suffered nosebleeds, seizures, and memory loss, among other symptoms. Officials at ICE have cut communications with her attorney and her family and have not allowed her to receive the surgery she needs to survive.

The woman — identified only as Sara — is a mother of two who allegedly fled threats of violence in El Salvador to come to the U.S. She was initially detained after entering the U.S. and later made an asylum claim. However, the window to make such a claim had elapsed and a judge ordered her deportation. Her legal team appealed. She has been in detention for almost two years and was only released to the hospital after she collapsed. Sign our petition to demand that ICE releases Sara into the care of medical professionals and allows her to receive the surgery she needs to survive.

Dear Director Homan,

I was shocked to hear that ICE agents in Texas detained a woman who was undergoing treatment for a brain tumor. As you may know, her condition has worsened and she is experiencing memory loss, nosebleeds, and convulsions. Medical professionals have stated that she needs surgery to remove the tumor or she will likely die.

While I recognize that this woman — identified only as Sara — is subject to a deportation order pending her appeal, that order should not be a death sentence. She requires immediate medical attention at an appropriate medical facility. I urge you to release her into medical care so she can receive the surgery she needs to survive.

  1. Is it possible for these ICE officials to have compassion on this woman and allow her to have the life-saving surgery? I sincerely hope so.
The fact that they have cut her communication with her family and attorney is outrageous.
