Target: Christopher C. Myers, North Dakota District Attorney
Goal: Punish the police officers who tased a Native American who appeared to have done nothing wrong.
A video has surfaced showing a group of police officers surrounding a Native American man who appeared to put his hands up and pose no threat, and tasing him to the ground. Police are supposed to only use a taser when they face an immediate threat, and this man did not look like he posed one. Demand these officers are punished for abusing this allegedly innocent man.
The tasing happened at the Prairie Knights Casino, where there have been reports of police arresting groups of Native people for no apparent reason. There are reports that the unnamed man was a “water protector” and veteran who had been evacuated from the campground where people were protesting the controversial and dangerous Dakota Access Pipeline.
The video shows a group of officers surrounding the man and another man with him and claiming the men were suspiciously passing something back and forth. The officers then tell the man to turn around so they can arrest him, and while he is slow to cooperate, he turns around and puts his hands up. That’s when the officers tase him for no reason.
The Natives have endured enough harassment by police officers while trying to protect their land, so to attack this man for what appears to be no reason is even more sickening and unjust. Demand these police officers are punished for their actions.
Dear Attorney General Myers,
A video is making the rounds on social media that appears to show a group of police officers tasing a Native American man and alleged veteran with his back turned and hands up. The man did not seem to pose any threat to these officers, yet he was attacked until he fell to the ground.
There is a long and violent history of police abusing Native Americans, and this video makes it apparent that this is still a massive issue. Police have been caught on video abusing their power far too many times, and they cannot get away with this. I demand you press charges against these officers.
