Target: Mayor of the City of Churchill, Manitoba, Mr. Michael Spence
Goal: Stop the polar bears in Manitoba, a province of Canada, from being trapped and sold to a zoo.
Churchill, Manitoba is known as the polar bear capital of the world. The town claims to protect inhabitants by “humanely” trapping polar bears that come to close. In reality the town lures the hungry bears in with meat filled traps. The bears are then placed in captivity referred to as the “polar bear jail.” When the “jail” become full the bears are released in the wilderness. The caught polar bears are held without food and kept away from any people. The releasing of the polar bears is a huge tourist industry. Thousands of tourists come to watch the spectacle.
The capture and release is unduly traumatic for the polar bears. They are drugged into semi-consciousness when trapped in a net and flown under the helicopter until they are released. The hungry polar bears are tortured and exploited for capital gain. Even worse, some of the bears are not released, but sold to zoos around the world where they are held in captivity for the rest of their lives. Zoos are frequently a miserable place for polar bears due to unfamiliar temperatures and lack of diversity.
Please, help stop these polar bears from being captured and exploited for entertainment.
Dear Mayor Spence,
Churchill, Manitoba is known as the polar bear capital of the world. It is understandable that the citizens may need some protection from the polar bears, but the current practice is inhumane. The polar bears are near starving and easily lured in with meat filled traps. The hungry polar bears are held in a hangar, nicknamed the “polar bear jail” without food and kept from any human interaction. They are then drugged into semi-consciousness and taken on what must be an incredibly traumatic helicopter ride in a suspended net.
All of this for an incredibly huge tourist industry. Thousands of tourists come to watch the polar bears being released. Capturing and releasing the polar bears is unduly traumatic for them and exploitative. It is unacceptable to torture these bears for profit. Even worse, is that some of the bears aren’t released at all, but sold to a zoo where they will live the rest of their lives in misery and captivity.
Please, stop the trapping of hungry polar bears as a tourist attraction.
