Target: Orrin Hatch, President Pro Tempore of the United States Senate
Goal: Do not allow Trump administration to revoke transgender bathroom rights.
The Trump administration has lifted the federal guidelines allowing transgender students to use whichever bathroom matches their gender identity. While the guidelines issued under the Obama administration were not legally binding, they were highly necessary to further the rights and protection of transgender students.
Trump is proving to be more and more of an enemy to transgender rights, allowing his administration to make decisions that harm transgender citizens and force this country back into the dark ages. Transgender people were finally being taken seriously and treated with dignity and respect, a big part of which was being allowed to use whichever bathroom matched their identity rather than being forced to use the one that matched their “birth sex.” Now, Trump’s administration is taking this right away from them.
We cannot let this happen. Transgender people deserve better than this, and they always have. We were finally walking away from the harmful and hate-based misconceptions of old, and we must not take any steps backward or allow the administration to force us to. Sign this petition to demand Trump’s administration not only put the guidelines back in place, but that they become legally binding so that the administration cannot take them away.
Dear President Pro Tempore Hatch,
The Trump administration has taken away the federal guidelines allowing transgender students to use the bathrooms of their choice. These guidelines were put in place by the Obama administration, but were not legally binding at the time; however, they were and still are highly necessary.
For too long, society has perpetuated and played into harmful misconceptions regarding transgender people; for example, women who believe a trans woman born with a male body is using the ladies’ room so she can sexually assault other women. These misconceptions are bigoted, and transgender people suffered for them. Now, after finally being allowed to use whichever bathroom matched their gender identity, that privilege is being taken away from them.
That privilege needs to not only be reinstated, but to become a legal right. Demand the Trump administration put the guidelines back in place, and make them law so that transgender people can feel respected and treated like human beings instead of invasive rapists.
