Praise City For Banning Sale of Commercially-Bred Animals in Pet Stores

Target: London Breed, President of San Francisco’s Board of Supervisors

Goal: Praise San Francisco’s ban of selling non-rescue animals at pet stores.

San Francisco recently made the decision to ban the sale of non-rescue animals at all its pet stores. The Board of Supervisors voted unanimously on the topic and the city follows in the footsteps of fellow California city, Los Angeles.

The dogs and cats that are sold in pet stores typically come from puppy mills and other large-scale breeding operations. At these operations, animals are held in small, dirty cages. Disease spreads like wildfire due to the lack of sanitation, extremely close quarters and large number of animals. In addition, millions of rescue dogs and cats are put down each year due to the lack of homes and space in shelters. There is no point in purposely making more cats and dogs when countless lives are ended due to lack of resources.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Ms. Breed,

Recently, the San Francisco Board of Supervisors voted unanimously to ban the sale of non-rescue animals in all of its pet stores. This is great news.

Dogs and cats that are sold in pet stores typically come from mass breeding operations like puppy mills. At these large scale operations, animals are typically held in small, dirty cages. Disease is common among the animals and spreads very quickly due to the overcrowding, extremely close quarters, and lack of sanitation. Stopping the sale of these animals means these operations will lose financial support which hopefully leads to fewer animals being forced into these horrible conditions. In addition, millions of animals are put down due to the lack of homes and space in shelters. This new ban will help lower that number.

Thank you for making this compassionate change. I can only hope more cities follow in your footsteps.

Sincerely,
