Target: Representative Linda L. Upmeyer, Speaker of the House, Iowa
Goal: Do not require applicants for university faculty to state their party affiliation and hire to achieve “partisan balance.”
“Partisan balance” may become a requirement among the faculty of public universities in Iowa, if a new bill passes. This is a transparent attempt to prevent Democrats from getting hired at Iowa universities, which is incredibly unconstitutional.
The legislation would require faculty to state their party affiliation when they apply for a job, and the Secretary of State’s office would have to provide colleges with voter registration lists to check before they hire an applicant. It says that “a person shall not be hired as a professor or instructor member of the faculty at such an institution if the person’s political party affiliation on the date of hire would cause the percentage of faculty belonging to one political party to exceed by ten percent the percentage of faculty belonging to the other political party.”
Since it is likely that significantly more Iowa professors are registered Democrats, the bill would effectively mean that only applicants without party affiliation, or registered Republicans, can be hired in Iowa’s universities. This is unreasonable, discriminatory, and ultimately un-American. Sign below and demand that teachers be hired based on merit, qualification, and teaching ability, and not their political party.
Dear Speaker Upmeyer,
It has come to my attention that a proposed bill would require “partisan balance” among university faculty in Iowa, and applicants would be forced to state their party affiliation as grounds for hire. Faculty at Iowa’s universities should be hired based on their teaching ability, not their party affiliation.
Requiring applicants to state their political party, and preventing them from being hired if there are too many teachers of the same party already at the school, is unconstitutional and discriminatory. It is harmful to professors who will be denied jobs because of party affiliation, and to Iowa’s students, who will be deprived of the best education they could receive if the best applicant for a job cannot be hired. I urge you not to pass this dangerous, un-American legislation.
