Target: California Governor Jerry Brown
Goal: Ensure that all energy in California comes from renewable sources by 2045.
California has the opportunity to lead the national resistance against the Trump administration’s regressive energy policies. The state is rich in solar and wind farming potential, given its vast swaths of deserts and open land. Three of the state’s largest investor-owned utilities are also moving ahead of proposed goals to have half of all energy they produce come from renewable sources by 2030. In this spirit, a bill proposed in the California State Senate would ensure that all energy used within the state would come from renewable sources by 2045.
The bill would push the state’s deadline to transition to 50% renewable energy five years sooner. If passed, California would join Hawaii which has also set a 2045 goal to fully wean itself off of fossil fuels. Although California has become a solar energy leader, producing over 1 gigawatt in solar energy annually, it still has a long way to go. Natural gas production (including from fracking) continues to be a major source of power within the state, while energy from coal generated in Arizona and Nevada is also used to power homes and businesses.
Yet as the world’s sixth largest economy, if California can successfully make this leap, it would signal nationally and around the world that clean energy is not only viable, but is the way of the future. Beyond environmental benefits, there are huge opportunities for economic growth as a result. Solar energy has created over 100,000 jobs in California so far, and this number would likely grow dramatically should this bill be enacted into law.
It is vitally important that states such as California do all that they can to move away from fossil fuels, which are the main contributor to human-caused climate change. We must send a message that dangerous and dirty forms of energy such as coal and gas are obsolete and have no place in our future.
Sign the petition below to urge California Governor Jerry Brown to show his support for this bill and to commit to a green future for California.
Dear Governor Brown,
Renewable energy, such as from wind and solar, has made enormous positive contributions within the state of California. The solar sector alone has created over 100,000 jobs, and wind farms near Los Angeles will soon generate nearly 1500 megawatts of electricity. These are all encouraging steps in the right direction, but we must strive further. Current mandates to move toward 50% renewable sources by the year 2030 would be beneficial, but with the progress already made, we can do better.
The bill proposed by California State Senate President Kevin De Leon to move toward fully renewable sources by 2045 is a laudable goal, and I urge you to support it. California has shown that it has the natural resources as well as the innovative talent to come up with clean energy solutions which will benefit the planet as a whole. We must show the nation where the future truly lies, in green energy, and not with obsolete and dangerous non-renewable sources like gas and coal.
I hope you will help usher in this new green era for the state, and for the benefit of the environment worldwide.
