Target: Carolyn Reidy, President and CEO of Simon & Schuster
Goal: Thank major publisher for dropping book deal with Milo Yiannopoulos.
Due to the uncovering of a video in which ex-Breitbart News editor, Milo Yiannopoulos, seems to show support for pedophilia and laughs off the severity of it being present in the Catholic church, Simon and Schuster has decided to drop his name from its list of authors. Many in the literary community, including those who signed this ForceChange petition, voiced protest when it was first announced that the provocative white supremacist would be allowed to release his book under the major publisher, accumulating to acclaimed writer, Roxane Gay, pulling her new title from the company’s line up. With Yiannopoulos’s name already under fire, the publishing giant had no choice but to drop his book, lest they lose more customers and writers.
Yiannopoulos is known for being kicked off Twitter after leading a coalition of harassment against star of “Saturday Night Live” and the new “Ghostbusters” film, Leslie Jones. Prior to this incident, he was a mildly popular blogger known for his outrageously prejudiced statements against Muslims, black people, women, and the LGBTQ community. His more recent statements condoning sexual consent between “sexually mature” teens (which he believes means age 13) and adults has been enough to additionally cost him speaking events and his career with Breitbart. The news outlet fired him amidst protests from fellow editors who were prepared to quit their jobs if Yiannopoulos was not let go.
Naturally, amidst the controversy, the alt-right activist has attempted to deny that he supports pedophilia, claiming that the term only applies to young children (as opposed to adolescents) and that his sarcasm and British accent allowed for misinterpretation. Unfortunately for him, it is too late to save his position at Breitbart with that rhetoric, and it is too late for his career as a book author. Sign this petition to applaud Simon & Schuster for finally dropping Yiannopoulos’s book.
Dear Ms. Reidy,
I am writing to thank you for finally deciding to drop Milo Yiannopoulos’s book. As a bully who spreads hate speech, he should never have been offered a platform of such prestige in the first place. You have tarnished the name of your brand and lost credibility with readers and authors all over the world.
Your attempt to publish this white supremacist and then only drop his book after news of his deplorable behavior reached national attention, shows that you only care about money. Unfortunately, Simon & Schuster has revealed themselves to be below standards of art and decency. Regardless, dropping his book was the right thing to do in order to limit his publicity, and I ask that you continue to keep him off your list of authors.
