Tell British Actor Dennis Waterman to Stop Blaming Women for His Abusive Actions

Target: Dennis Waterman, UK-based actor and singer

Goal: To protest celebrity Dennis Waterman’s insulting comments that made light of his violent acts against ex-wife Rula Lenska.

Seasoned British actor Dennis Waterman has come under fire for beating his now ex-wife, Rula Lenska. And after more than a decade, he finally admitted recently that he had slapped and punched her. If that wasn’t disgusting enough, he claimed that “it’s not difficult for a woman to make a man hit her,” among other things. Tell Waterman that these types of anti-woman statements are appalling and will not be tolerated.

“She certainly wasn’t a beaten wife, she was hit and that’s different,” the New Tricks actor said on Piers Morgan’s talk show, Life Stories. Later, Waterman stated, “I must have punched her one time ’cause she did have a black eye.”

What this actor doesn’t seem to understand is that no matter how many times he committed violence against his ex-wife, he was still inexcusably wrong.

Waterman further attempted to defend his actions by arguing that since Lenska is a “strong, intelligent” woman, she is difficult to argue with. Therefore, he “lashed out” out of “frustration.” He also went so far as to call her a “power freak.”

In the interview, Waterman also said he believes “there is a place for women at home.”

So apparently, if you’re losing an argument of words with your wife, you can end the fight with a fist. This type of thinking is not only intent on keeping women under male control, but poses a danger to their very lives.

For victims of domestic abuse, the pain doesn’t end when the physical attacks cease.

“Once a woman has been hit, she lives with the fear it could happen again and research shows it almost always does,” a Refuge representative told the UK’s Mirror.

Waterman’s actions were reprehensible, but blaming his victim for his violent measures is even more deplorable. By signing the petition below, you will tell Waterman to take responsibility for his terrible actions and to stop faulting women for his wrongs.

Dear Mr. Waterman,

Making light of your violent and abusive actions against your ex-wife, Rula Lenska, is utterly wrong and dangerous for women everywhere. Women who have been abused don’t deserve to hear you say things like “it’s not difficult for a woman to make a man hit her.”

These victim blaming tactics are not only shameful, but can negatively impact abused women and promotes the message that hitting women for being strong willed is acceptable.

It is imperative that you hold yourself accountable for these regretful decisions and cease speaking out against women. Please commit to taking action immediately.
