No More Guns in Schools

Target: Terry McAuliffe, Governor of Virginia

Goal: Do not allow more guns in Virginia schools.

Firearms may be allowed to be carried by “school security officers” inside Virginia schools, if a new bill passes. This is an unnecessary risk and danger, not only because these security officers’ job descriptions indicate no reason that they would need a lethal weapon, but also because Virginia’s schools already have official police officers, there to serve a law enforcement function, who are armed.

Police officers placed in Virginia schools by the local police department to provide law enforcement and security services are called “school resource officers.” They are trained in the use of their weapons, and there is absolutely no need for an increase of firearms in schools. The school security officers — who are not police and who are hired by the local school district to maintain order and discipline among the students — do not need deadly weapons in order to do their jobs, and realistically would not be able to foster a safe, productive, or healthy relationship with students with those weapons. Sign below and keep these guns out of our schools.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Governor McAuliffe,

Please do not bring guns into Virginia’s schools. The bill that would allow school security officers to carry firearms is irresponsible and unnecessary, and should not be passed.

The job of school security officers is to maintain order and discipline among the students. This is not a duty that requires a lethal weapon, and in fact arming security officers would be damaging to the relationship between them and the students, who should never feel they have to fear for their lives while in school. Additionally, Virginia’s school resource officers — official police officers placed in schools by their department in order to enforce the law — are already allowed to carry firearms in schools. How many guns does a school really need?

Guns in schools put our children in danger far more than they protect them. I urge you not to needlessly increase this danger. Please do not allow more guns in Virginia’s schools.

Sincerely,

Schools are not meant to be war zones, a fact which the politically-uneducated Republicans have no clue of!!!! KEEP GUNS OUT OF SCHOOLS NOW!!!

  2. Paulette Mirfield says:

In spite of devos’ rationalization, there hasn’t been a grizzly attack Virginia in recorded history. With gun laws becoming soooo relaxed, how can you guarantee that person is sane and balanced enough to wield a weapon?

  3. If there had been an officer with a gun in the schools in which the children were massacredoing, they may be alive today. Don’t be ignorant. Killers have guns. We need someone with a gun who can protect our children. I taught for 25 years. There is no protection in schools. The only way to stop a killer with a gun is to have a good guy with a Gun! Think about it!

    • I know the NRA believes that, but there is NO PROOF of it……! In fact, it seems innocent bystanders are most often hit by flying bullets!

The entire Sandy Hook tragedy took place in a few minutes, very brief time, and the perpetrator shot himself.

Visualize a teacher with a class of wiggly, curious 1st graders having to HIDE a gun safely in her classroom, and yet ALSO be able to get to it and use it in seconds…..I can’t see it happening.

      • Lajeanne…there is a slew of proof if you are simply willing to look at both sides. “Innocent bystanders are most often hit”…are you serious? Take a look at civilian shootings that ended a criminal act and then tell me that your comment was accurate~!

  4. Or as Betsy DeVos said in her hard hitting (sarcasm!) Congressional hearing to be made Dept. of Ed. “and there’s Grizzly Bears”…….!!!!

    • JessicaMy fiance come from a very traditional puerto rican family. Thy8;#e217&d start a riot if we eloped. So we’re looking at a two year engagement so we can afford to host a big wedding in NYC.

Sorry, But I do not believe that there should be any weapons anywhere near a school, let alone on the grounds.
This is the problem where guns seem to be the the first weapon drawn in almost every indecent lately, causing so many unnecessary deaths of innocent people and dogs. Please if you want to play cowboys go to a rifle range not out on the streets, peoples homes and in schools.
