Target: Paul Ryan, Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives
Goal: Stop the bullying of minority youths brought on by Trump’s election.
Ever since the election, more minority youths have reported severe bullying due to the victory of Donald Trump. The bullying of minorities was bad enough with Obama in office, but now that a bigot like Trump is president, the bullies seem to feel more encouraged in their efforts to ensure that people they dislike feel unsafe and unwanted. One family reported having to do their laundry at 2 a.m. to avoid assault in public, while many LGBT+ youths put off coming out, even to their families.
This is completely unacceptable and disgusting. Bullying is already enough of a problem as it is, with in-school harassment and cyberbullying leading to the suicides of several youths. The new layer of bigotry makes it much worse. Efforts to stop bullying and harassment have been strong, but they need to be even stronger. People are too afraid to leave their homes or be seen in public, and this is exactly what the bigots want.
This is not what America should stand for. America was founded upon the premise of freedom of choice, and not only is Donald Trump trying to destroy that foundation, but everyday bigots and bullies are too eager to help spread the malice in hope that only “their” kind will be happy and successful while everyone they dislike is punished for being who they are. Sign this petition to demand a stop be put to this horrific behavior.
Dear Speaker Ryan,
There has been a disturbing increase in the bullying of minorities ever since the election of Donald Trump as president. Jews, Muslims, African-Americans, Hispanics, and LGBT+ students and their families are harassed constantly, to the point where they go out of their way to hide who they are out of fear.
This is not what America was founded upon, and should not be what we stand for. America has come a long way since the days of sexism and slavery, but this harassment and bullying of anyone who is not white, straight, Christian, or cis-sexual is forcing us back into the dark ages. This country should stand for freedom of choice, the right of every citizen to feel comfortable being who they are without being attacked for it.
You must take strong measures to put a stop to this behavior. Enforce stronger anti-bullying laws countrywide and demand schools harshly discipline those who wish to drive other students to despair for being a certain color, religion, or sexual orientation. Donald Trump must not get his wish to turn this country into a place where minorities are made to fear for their lives.
