Target: Dagmar Strobel-Langpaul, Magistrate of the Federal Administrative Court
Goal: Praise ruling against runway expansion project that would have contributed to climate change.
A federal administrative court in Austria blocked the proposed addition of a third runway at Vienna International Airport in Schwechat, Austria. The Austrian runway project had been fiercely opposed by environmental activists since it gained initial government approval in 2007. This judgement was hailed as groundbreaking because it was the first time climate change was specifically referenced as the deciding factor in a rejection of a large-scale infrastructure project.
An environmental impact assessment estimated that the third runway would cause additional air traffic, accounting for a 1.79 percent increase in transportation-related carbon emissions. This was cited by the three-judge panel as a primary factor in their determination, as the project would have violated a 2011 constitutional amendment requiring a 2.25 percent reduction in transportation-sector emissions by 2020.
At a time when environmental concerns often collide directly with those in the business sector, it is critical that an impartial court stands as an objective arbiter. Please sign the below petition applauding the efforts of the federal administrative court in Austria.
Dear Magistrate Strobel-Langpaul,
I am writing to praise your groundbreaking decision to reject the proposed expansion of the Vienna International Airport in Schwechat. This objective decision considered the potential negative effects of climate change while also respecting emission reduction goals stated in the Austrian constitution.
At a time when concerns for the climate often conflict directly with those in the business sphere, it is critical that a neutral judiciary stands as an objective arbiter. Thank you for blocking this expansion project, and I hope you continue to make future decisions with the environment in mind.
