Penalize Officer Who Allegedly Used Taser on Pregnant 17-Year-Old

Target: Inspector Ruel R. Stephenson, head of NYPD’s 47th precinct

Goal: Suspend officer reportedly responsible for using a stun gun on pregnant woman and mandate sensitivity training.

Footage has been released of a pregnant 17-year-old woman being tasered outside her apartment by NYPD officers. Prior to the tasering, officers had reportedly come to the woman’s apartment to investigate what they believed to be an argument, which had already been resolved by the time they’d arrived. When the woman refused to let the officers into her apartment, she claims that she was pulled out into the hallway. The video shows the woman on the ground, screaming that she is pregnant as an officer continues to restrain her by twisting her arm behind her back. She demands to be released but is tasered instead.

There is an internal investigation underway, but the head of the Sergeants’ Union has stated that he supports the use of a Taser in this case, suggesting that a penalty for the cop in question is unlikely. Demand that the cop be held responsible by signing this petition.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Inspector Stephenson,

I  am writing concerning recent footage that has surfaced showing an NYPD officer tasering a young, pregnant woman. Although she may have been belligerent, it is difficult to believe that she could have possibly posed enough of a physical threat to the multiple officers present to justify the use of a Taser.

Officers should have done their part to de-escalate the situation when the woman claimed to be pregnant rather than forging ahead with what appears to be excessive force. I demand that the officer responsible for the tasering be suspended without pay and required to undergo sensitivity training in order to learn how to better handle similar situations in the future.

Sincerely,

  3. Hell no, I’m not signing this petition! I just watched the video and report about what happened. It’s just like these criminal types to scream “unfair” when they resist and get what they deserve. BTW, people, she wasn’t harmed by the police. And if she was so concerned about her baby, she should have complied with the police.

    • NYPD cops are advised NOT to taser pregnant women. As the video indicates, they knew she was pregnant. As well, although she was resisting them, she was NOT a threat to anyone so there was no reason to taser her. Instead of using brute force, the cops should learn non-violent methods to deal with such situations.
