Target: Jason Frierson, Speaker of the Nevada State Assembly
Goal: Support assemblyman’s legislation that would ban fracking in Nevada, a state home to a fragile desert ecosystem and its many species.
Nevada Assemblyman Justin Watkins has introduced legislation that would prohibit fracking in Nevada. While currently there is no fracking occurring in the state, there are fracking wells and the possibility for fracking in the future. Watkins’s legislation takes a proactive step in preventing the serious damages fracking can cause.
Fracking, in which oil is gathered from the ground by hydraulic fracturing, is responsible for polluting drinking water, which leads to the death of animals and an increase in cancer among humans. Fracking has also led to an increase in seismic activity and deadly explosions. The negative effects such a practice has on the environment are irreversible.
Watkins should be applauded for his forward-thinking steps. States like Pennsylvania and Oklahoma have suffered immensely due to fracking. Had similar legislation been proposed in those states, perhaps their landscape and environment would look much different. Sign the petition and demand that Nevada’s state government support this legislation.
Dear Mr. Frierson,
Fellow assemblyman Justin Watkins has recently introduced legislation that would ban the environmentally damaging practice of fracking. While fracking currently does not occur in Nevada, there are fracking wells in the state, and there is a great possibility that fracking may once again pick up.
Fracking has already irreversibly damaged the environments of states like Pennsylvania and Oklahoma and has contaminated the drinking water of citizens. Nevada has the opportunity to prevent these disasters from occurring. I ask that you and your fellow assemblymen and women support Mr. Watkins’s legislation to prohibit fracking in your state.
