Save World Heritage Site From Oil Spill

Target: Pranab Mukherjee, President of India

Goal: Hold company accountable for failing to clean up toxic oil spill that threatens a whole ecosystem.

An oil spill that occurred in January, off the southern coast of India, has still not been cleaned up and now threatens a World Heritage Site. The spill, which happened when two tanker ships collided, occurred almost 60 km away from the town of Mamallapuram and now threatens their town and entire ecosystem. The pace of cleanup for this oil spill must be quickened; its spread now goes far beyond original estimates, and its effects have been far more devastating.

It was stated weeks ago that the spill would be cleaned up in two days, but that has not been the case. Currently, the companies responsible for the oil spill are being investigated by the Indian authorities for their poor response time, and insufficient clean up of this disaster. This poor response time and insufficient clean up has led to the quick spread of this harmful substance up and down the coast.

This spill now threatens countless villages along the coast, and will continue to have negative effects long after it is cleaned up. Residents are afraid to eat the few fish that they catch from the water because they are covered in oil. These future problems need to be accounted for and remedied during the cleanup process.

Sign this petition to force the company responsible to quicken the pace and the efficiency of their clean up effort, and to remedy the long term effects on the ecosystem in which the spill has devastated.

Dear President Mukherjee,

The oil spill off the coast of Chennai city still has not been cleaned up, and now has spread over 60 km up and down the coast, threatening a world heritage site. It was stated weeks ago that this spill would be cleaned up in two days, but that has not been the case. Countless marine animals as well as coastal villages have been impacted by the spill, and will be affected for months after cleanup is completed.

Use your power to force this company to ensure a complete and efficient cleanup of this spill. They are already under investigation for their poor response time. Make their punishment for inadequacy be the complete cleanup and remedy of the areas hurt by this spill.

  1. The company responsible for this oil spill should be immediately made to clean it up. It’s disgusting that they are trying to avoid cleaning it up.
