Target: Kirsten H. Pabst, County Attorney for Missoula, Montana
Goal: Demand the maximum penalty for the men who allegedly shouted homophobic slurs at a gay couple and then attacked them.
Two gay men were attacked while walking down the street, hand in hand. The attackers allegedly shouted homophobic slurs just prior to the attack. Take a stand against hate crimes and demand justice for these men.
“There are people that truly hate us and will attack us,” stated David Herrera, a member of the Western Montana LGBT Community Center. This attack is not the first to happen in the Missoula community and is likely to not be the last. Though Missoula is considered progressive, assaults still occur and hate speech has reportedly become more common on local, state, and national levels in recent months.
The victims suffered only minor injuries in the attack. Missoula police are investigating this as a potential hate crime. They have posted detailed descriptions of the suspects, but have not yet identified them. Sign below and demand that the suspects receive the maximum penalty by law, if convicted.
Dear County Attorney Pabst,
Two gay men were assaulted while walking home from a Missoula bar. Police are investigating the attack as a possible hate crime. We demand justice for these innocent men.
“Whether you’re a person of color, whether you’re a woman, whether you’re a part of the LGBT community, knowing that this can happen, you sort of grow up knowing ‘Yeah, it isn’t a safe place out there in certain parts of this country and this state,’ ” stated Herrera. The victims did not suffer any life-threatening injuries in this attack. However, it could have been much worse.
Hate crimes cannot be tolerated. We demand that you seek the maximum penalty in this case.
