Target: Angela Merkel, Chancellor of Germany
Goal: Enact a permanent ban on fracking, to prevent destruction of Germany’s landscape and exploitation of natural resources.
The German parliament has taken action to restrict fracking until 2021, but this four-year policy does not go far enough. Conservationists demand a complete ban in order to protect the nation and its natural resources from the perils of fracking.
Fracking, or hydraulic fracturing, is a practice used to extract extract natural gas, whereby fluid is injected into deep rocks at high pressure, creating cracks that allow fossil fuel reserves to flow more freely. Though it is no longer allowed near drinking water, it is still permitted in other locations. Fracking has had disastrous effects in the United States, where it is widespread. Pipelines have exploded, seismic activity has increased, and comparisons have been drawn between fracking and cancer rates. In addition, pristine landscapes have been destroyed. Germany should not fall victim to the same fate.
While the German government has acknowledged the danger fracking poses to drinking water (which is more than can be said for the United States government), it has not gone far enough in efforts to protect citizens, animals, and the environment. Demand that the German government expand upon this four year restriction, and take the ultimate step of banning fracking permanently.
Dear Chancellor Merkel,
While I applaud the German Government for taking positive steps to regulate fracking, so much more can be done. Fracking is most detrimental to drinking water, but it also poses other dangers, like increased earthquakes, explosions, and potentially greater rates of cancer.
Germany should take a stand to firmly cement itself as a leader on the frontier of clean energy, and a nation against the harmful practice of fracking. I ask that the German government go beyond regulating fracking for the next four years, and instead put an end to it forever.
