Target: Home Secretary Amber Rudd
Goal: Reopen the Dubs amendment scheme and accept child refugees.
The government of the UK has closed a scheme aimed at resettling child refugees after settling just 350; the scheme aimed to resettle 3000 child refugees. The government claims that they have fulfilled the ‘spirit of the program’ and that the program acts as a draw to refugees, fueling migration and funding human traffickers. However, closing the program does little to address the burgeoning humanitarian crisis in Europe. There are an estimated 420,000 child refugees in Europe, 90,000 of which are unaccompanied. Over the past year, over 10,000 child refugees have gone missing in Europe, victims of assault, accidents, and trafficking. The scheme, known as the Dubs Amendment, was authored by Lord Dubs, himself a former child refugee who fled from Nazi-occupied Czechoslovakia to the UK.
British military action in Iraq, Afghanistan, and Syria have fueled the current refugee crisis. The end of the resettlement program endangers child refugees across Europe and undermines British commitments to the rights of refugees. Ending this program represents a dereliction of the government’s duty to cooperate with governments across Europe to shelter children fleeing conflict. Dear Home Secretary Rudd,
I was appalled to hear that the Home Office has suspended the Dubs Amendment resettlement scheme and shocked to hear claims that the resettlement of 350 children fulfils the ‘spirit of the program.’ As you must know, there are at least 420,000 child refugees in Europe. 90,000 of these children are unaccompanied. The vast majority of these children are out of school and lack adequate food and shelter. They are vulnerable to exploitation, violence, and trafficking, a condition that has led to an estimated 10,000 child refugees disappearing in just the past year.
The UK must live up to its commitment in adherence with international law as well as the nation’s moral duty to provide shelter to these children. Further, as the treatment, education, and general well-being of these children may define the future stability of their home countries, it is in the UK’s long-term security interests as well. I urge you to reopen the Dubs Amendment child refugee resettlement scheme.
