Save the Department of Education

Target: Kevin McCarthy, House Majority Leader

Goal: Stop a bill that would eliminate the Department of Education.

Betsy DeVos may have been confirmed as Secretary of Education, but if some Republicans have their way, she may not have the job for long. A new bill proposes to dismantle the Department of Education by the end of 2018. This is a horrifying prospect for the children of America, especially those who rely on public school education and the various services that the Department currently funds.

The Department of Education is responsible for providing funding for programs that promote literacy, science education, and access to higher education. Additionally, it provides buses free of cost for children who might not otherwise have transportation available and provides funding for online home schooling, which many children with disabilities rely on. Without the Department of Education, millions of children would lose access to these services, as many if not most would likely face severe cuts nationwide.

The congressmen supporting this bill offer no replacements or alternatives, and show no regard for ensuring that children with disabilities or that those in rural or low-income areas can receive a quality education. The author of the bill, Representative Thomas Massie of Kentucky, also sponsored a similar bill that would eliminate the EPA.

We cannot leave states scrambling to provide necessary funding for public and higher education or risk losing programs that so many children currently rely on. The future of America relies upon the education of its youth. Sign this petition to demand that Congress stops this insane bill in its tracks.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Congressman McCarthy,

Recently, Representative Thomas Massie (KY) proposed a bill that would eliminate the Department of Education by the end of 2018. This would almost certainly result in a crisis for education nationwide, and would leave public schools cut off from crucial funding.

This is not about Congress dictating how and what children must learn as the sponsors of the bill assert, but ensuring that all children, including those who have disabilities or who are disadvantaged, have access to a quality education. Education is a right for all Americans, yet the bill would leave the most vulnerable children stranded without buses to get to school, without programs to enrich their education with science or the arts, and without the opportunity to receive a higher education through student loans. Their future — and the future of this nation — is at stake.

You must stop this bill from passing in the House at all costs. All children deserve the opportunities that education affords, and I am urging you to uphold this basic right.

Sincerely,
