Don’t Ban Safe Havens for Undocumented Immigrants

Target: Candice Keller, Ohio State Representative

Goal: Withdraw legislation that seeks to ban sanctuary cities and punish city officers for immigrants’ crimes.

Ohio’s sanctuary cities and the thousands of undocumented immigrants they protect are under attack. Republican state representative Candice Keller has proposed a bill that, if passed, would not only ban Ohio’s sanctuary cities but also penalize municipal officers for crimes committed by undocumented immigrants. Opponents of the bill have criticized it as unconstitutional, condemning Keller’s attempt to hold city law enforcement officers civilly and criminally liable for crimes they have not committed.

Representative Keller’s reasoning for writing this bill strongly suggests that her motivation may be rooted in personal prejudice. Despite her claim that she is “not anti-immigrant” but “anti-criminal,” she has made unfounded claims that undocumented immigrants are responsible for “sexual assault, sexually transmitted diseases, child marriage, child rape and prostitution.” Tell Representative Keller that her discriminatory bill is not what will strengthen the state of Ohio or the country as a whole by signing below.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Representative Keller,

I do not support your bill to ban sanctuary cities from the state of Ohio and to hold municipal officers legally accountable for crimes committed by undocumented immigrants. The polarizing and chaotic repercussions of President Trump’s immigration ban should serve as a warning, not as an invitation to follow suit. We are now living in a nation deeply divided, and encouraging anti-immigrant rhetoric and laws will not bring us closer to reconciliation.

History has shown us that immigrants are an integral part of what makes Ohio, and the rest of this country, great. Please take a stand on the right side of history by withdrawing your bill.

Sincerely,
