Women Shouldn’t Have to Ask Men’s Permission for Abortions

Target: Alaska state Representative Alan Dick

Goal: To protest Republican Representative Dick’s suggestion that women should have to ask whomever impregnated them for permission before obtaining abortions.

In yet another shocking attack on women’s reproductive rights, Alaska state Representative Alan Dick, a Republican, is arguing that women should have to ask men’s permission before undergoing abortion procedures. In this horrific infringement on women’s authority over their own bodies, Representative Dick is urging lawmakers to force women to obtain the biological fathers’ consent before abortions. Tell Representative Dick and Republican lawmakers in the state of Alaska that the public will not allow this dangerous move to become law.

According to The Mudflats, an Alaska-based progressive news site, Representative Dick refuses to believe that when a woman becomes pregnant, it is in fact, “her pregnancy.” Instead, he argues that men should have just as powerful a say in what goes on inside women’s own bodies.

Under Dick’s proposal, women who do not obtain written consent from men would be criminalized and sent to prison. “If I thought that the man’s signature was required in order for a woman to have an abortion, I’d have a little more peace about it,” Representative Dick publicly stated. Most shockingly, The Mudflats pointed out that a woman who was raped could be in danger of being forced to ask her rapist’s permission before having an abortion.

Sadly, this isn’t a new concept. According to a recent report by progressive website Care2.com, Ohio lawmakers pushed for a similar bill in 2009. Women would have been forced to provide lists of the men she slept with in cases where the biological father was uncertain.

Representative Dick’s unfair, anti-woman, and completely degrading argument should not be allowed to stand. By signing the statement below, you will tell Dick and Republican lawmakers to stop this flagrant attack on women’s reproductive rights.

Dear Representative Dick,

Your argument that women should ask for men’s permission before undergoing abortions is dangerous and anti-woman. Women deserve to have the freedom to choose without begging men for their permission.

Abortion is a right and sometimes even a life-saving necessity. In addition, it is a very personal choice for women, especially those who have been abused or raped.

It is imperative that you end your shaming tactics against women seeking abortion procedures. Please commit to taking action immediately.

While I support your sentiment and outrage, some of this petition is factually wrong. I listened to the entire audio of the two hour hearing. At the time ,it was an informational hearing to get input about the state cutting funding for medically necessary abortions through our state Medicaid program. There is a bill under consideration today to defund it, among other things. However, Dick was expressing his opinion, not proferring legislation, and did not ask for criminilization of pregnant women. He’s said more egregious things than this, such as equating a woman’s rape to pro lifers moral objections to abortion.
