Target: Rex Tillerson, Secretary of State
Goal: Condemn the vicious attack on a Russian activist, allegedly carried out by the Russian government.
Once again an activist and political opponent of the authoritarian Russian government under Vladimir Putin has been silenced by violence. Vladimir Kara-Murza, an opponent of the Russian government, has been poisoned for a second time. He was first poisoned in 2015.
Kara-Murza is currently unconscious and suffering from organ failure. He is a long-time opponent of President Putin and friend of activist Boris Nemtsov, an opposition leader who was gunned down in 2015 only feet from the Kremlin. That attack, as well as this most recent one, demonstrates the extreme measures the Russian government will take to silence opposition.
Kara-Murza was using his voice to fight for human rights. When he was attacked the first time, the American government defended Kara-Murza, whose family lives in the United States. However, due to the close ties between our current political leaders, like Secretary of State Rex Tillerson, and Putin, it seems unlikely that America will speak out this time. Sign the petition to demand that Secretary Tillerson publicly denounce the attack on this activist, and challenge Russia’s human rights violations.
Dear Secretary Tillerson,
Political activist Vladimir Kara-Murza was once again poisoned while in Russia. The attack is believed to have been carried out by the Russian government in an attempt silence Kara-Murza, who has become the nation’s foremost opponent against the Putin presidency since Boris Nemtsov’s murder in 2015.
This is the second time Kara-Murza has been poisoned while visiting Russia. The first time he was attacked, America came to his defense and spoke out against the violent action. I ask that you also speak out against the violence taken towards Kara-Murza, who is currently suffering from organ failure. Freedom of speech and assembly are facets of American life and we should denounce any country or individual who seeks to trample upon these rights.
