Target: Rob Bishop, Representative of Utah
Goal: Protect 1.3 million acres of natural land in Utah from destruction by the Republican-held congress.
Republicans are fighting to eliminate Bears Ears National Monument, 1.3 million acres of federal land in Utah established by President Obama before he left office. Led by Utah Representative Rob Bishop, Republicans would like to overturn the act that established the protected natural environment and ancestral land of Native Americans.
President Obama established this land under the Antiquities Act, which seeks to preserve and protect ancient land from destruction. However, Republicans believe that the president overstepped his power and set aside a piece of land that could be used for drilling. In other words, the Republicans believe the land is being wasted.
Our natural environment is suffering. Untouched parcels of land are shrinking and being replaced by sprawling factories, rapid development, and drilling wells. The little land we have left should be protected for generations, not destroyed for short-lived economic gain. Sign the petition to demand that the Republicans not move forward with plans to eliminate this important piece of land.
Dear Representative Bishop,
I’m deeply troubled by your recent statements about eliminating the recently established Bears Ears National Monument. This 1.3 million acres of land is one of the largest monuments of its kind and protects ancestral Native American land from development and destruction. However, you would like to use this land for drilling.
Our environment, our planet and its millions of species, are under attack. Untouched natural wonders like Bears Ears National Monument should be protected for future generations, not exploited for drilling, for a short-term economic boom that will fade as soon as the well dries up. I ask that you walk back your plans for eliminating this national monument.
