Target: Michael Conaway, Chairman of the House Committee on Agriculture
Goal: Preserve the integrity of the Clean Air Act, and do not nullify emissions standards set forth by the EPA.
Republicans in The House of Representatives have introduced a bill to rewrite the Clean Air Act. The rewrite will exclude greenhouse gases from regulation, essentially allowing companies to contribute to global warming without limitation. The bill also seeks to void emissions standards set forth by the EPA, and to cut environmental regulations pertaining in any way to climate change. This is a slap in the face to the progress we have made, and all the hard work we have done to fight for the environment over the past many years.
Endearingly termed the “Stopping EPA Overreach Act of 2017,” this bill is a thinly-veiled attempt to continue the denial of man-made climate change. The scientific community has long since reached a consensus on the absolute fact of man-made climate change — the ongoing “debate” is purely political, and as this bill shows, Republicans are on the side of fossil fuel interests.
The bill has been referred to the House Committee on Agriculture — an industry that is particularly vulnerable to the effects of climate change, as it depends on natural resources and climate factors. We must convince the Agriculture Committee to preserve the integrity of the EPA and the Clean Air Act.. Sign this petition to stop this dangerous bill before it even comes close to passing.
Dear Chairman Conaway,
As I’m sure you are aware, a bill is currently being considered to exempt greenhouse gases from regulation under the Clean Air Act, and further remove environmental regulations pertaining in any way to climate change. This is completely unacceptable.
Man-made climate change is scientific fact. Fossil fuel companies are only clinging to profits, at the expense of our well-being and the future of our planet. This is not only a matter of keeping our air clean. It is a matter of planning for the future — of heeding science rather than short-term profit, and using policy to protect ourselves and the planet we live on rather than serving the interests of the few.
You must oppose this bill and prevent it from going any further. The EPA and the Clean Air Act were created for the safety, health, and well-being of the American people — not only now, but for generations to come. Do not put us at risk by preventing them from doing their jobs.
