Don’t Drill for Oil Near Fragile Coral Reef

Target: Izabella Teixeira, Brazil’s Minister of Environment

Goal: Reject plan that would allow oil drilling near a newly discovered and environmentally fragile coral reef.

Only several years after its horrific oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico, BP is set to begin drilling again, this time near a newly discovered and very fragile 600-mile-long coral reef off the coast of Brazil. Drilling will take place as close as eight kilometers away from the reef.

The reef was discovered in 2014 and lauded as an incredible scientific find during a time in which so many other reefs were in danger of perishing. However, this beautiful, undisturbed reef may not last if BP has its way. The company would like to start drilling for the estimated 14 billion barrels of oil in the area as early as this year.

BP has shown itself incapable of handling an emergency. The Gulf of Mexico, home to so many different species, is still reeling from the BP spill seven years ago. Should a spill happen again, at this new location, another piece of the planet’s rich ecosystem will be destroyed. Sign the petition to ask Brazil’s Ministry of the Environment and the Brazilian Institute of Environment and Renewable Natural Resources to reject BP’s plans.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Minister Teixeira,

The Ministry of the Environment and the Brazilian Institute of Environment and Renewable Natural Resources are currently reviewing plans submitted by BP that would allow oil drilling along the edge of a newly discovered coral reef. While so many reefs throughout our planet’s oceans are vanishing, such as the Great Barrier Reef, a reef as undisturbed and beautiful as this new one in Brazil should be protected.

BP has a long history of negligence, culminating in the horrible oil spill in 2010, from which the Gulf of Mexico and its species are still recovering. Should the same happen off the coast of Brazil at this proposed drilling site, the same disastrous effects will be seen. I ask that you reject BP’s plans and protect this new environmental wonder.

Sincerely,
