Ensure Largest Coal Plant in the West Closes

Target: Doug Ducey, Governor of Arizona

Goal: Ensure largest coal plant in the West, and seventh largest CO2 producer in the U.S., is shut down.

The largest coal plant in the western United States, which is also the seventh largest single producer of carbon dioxide in the country, could be closing its doors. According to a company spokesperson, the falling price of natural gas and the increasing price of making energy from coal is making the operation of the plant too expensive. The closing of this coal plant would be a massive win for environmentalists the world over. Plants like this need to be closed if we are going to fight the effects of catastrophic climate change, and begin to remedy the harm done to the Earth.

This plant has, for many years, been a target for legislators because of its effects on the surrounding region. It frequently leads to haze and poor air quality in and around the Grand Canyon, which happens to be very near the location of the plant. This is just one of the countless reasons this facility should be shut down, even if not due to lack of funds.

Because the company is already questioning its ability to continue to function, this is the perfect chance for legislators and environmentalists to come together and work with the plant owners to successfully close its doors with as little harm to the employees and power grid as possible. This company’s fate is not set in stone yet; they plan on making a decision later in the spring about the future of this plant. With your help we can let the government and the corporation know that we want this plant closed.

Sign this petition to make sure this plant closes for good, and we continue saving the environment.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Governor Ducey,

The world we live in is changing, and one of the main ways it is evolving is where we get our energy. More and more people are switching to natural gas and other somewhat sustainable options, and away from dirty fuel such as coal and conventional oil. What comes along with this however, is backlash from these outdated industries. Many corporations fight to keep themselves relevant, and in turn end up hurting the environment even more.

We currently have an opportunity to peacefully shut down one of the largest CO2 producers in the entire United States, the Navajo Coal Plant. The previously-mentioned evolution is leading to a situation where this coal plant is no longer financially viable. The company has already admitted this fact, and is currently in the process of deciding what action to take.

This coal plant has been a blemish on the state of Arizona for far too long, and now you have the opportunity to shut it down while keeping the best interests of those employed and their families in mind.

Use your power to do the right thing, and help the Navajo Coal Plant shut its doors for good.

Sincerely,
