Target: Paul Ryan, Speaker of the House of Representatives
Goal: Do not weaken environmental protections for national parks to allow for dangerous and wasteful drilling.
U.S. national parks are at risk of losing their protection from gas and oil drilling. Over 40 parks that have “split estate” ownership — meaning that the federal government owns the surface but not the rights to minerals and anything below ground level — could lose the safeguards currently in place requiring detailed planning and safety standards before drilling is allowed.
The bill that would repeal these rules is the latest in a succession of attempts to weaken environmental protections for national parks. If it is voted into law, it will not only remove national park protections, but will also prevent agencies outside of Congress from putting similar environmental protections in place in the future. This is a huge violation of the integrity of the lands of our country and a huge threat to the environment. Sign below to demand the protection and preservation of our national parks.
Dear Speaker Ryan,
America’s national parks are an irreplaceable part of our culture and our identity, as well as a vital preservation of the environment. Please do not allow the rules and restrictions that protect them to be repealed for the sake of gas and oil drilling.
The regulations in place that require detailed planning and safety measures are not just reasonable, but necessary for the good of our country. There are over 40 national parks that have “split estate” ownership, and H.J. Res. 46 would be extremely detrimental and dangerous to those valuable lands. I urge you to keep the protections that preserve our lands intact, and not to pass this bill.
