Target: Mitch McConnell, Senate Majority Leader
Goal: Take steps to impeach Donald Trump if he oversteps constitutional boundaries.
Donald Trump’s travel ban may be so unconstitutional that he should legally be impeached. The executive order is obviously un-American because it targets a specific religion, and now Democrats in Washington are saying the president may have overstepped his authority. Texas Representative Joaquin Castro has expressed that if Trump tried to force any government agency to ignore a federal judge’s stay, that Congress should begin the process of censuring or impeaching him. Customs and Border Patrol (CBP) claim they have been following the judge’s order but immigration attorneys reported illegal deportations in the days after the judge placed the stay.
The travel ban effects seven Muslim-majority countries for 90 days, and there seems to be a correlation between countries Trump has business in and countries without a ban. It also suspends the refugee program. If the president is forcing government agencies like CBP to go against a federal judge’s orders, that means checks and balances have been negated. Many like Castro worry the United States may find itself in somewhat of a “military junta” if Trump is not relieved of his position. Please sign this petition to demand that Congress investigate whether or not Trump has exceeded his authority, and if so, begin the process the impeaching him.
Dear Senator McConnell,
Though a federal judge placed a stay on Trump’s executive order to ban Muslims from flying into the United States, allegations of illegal deportations were still being reported. It is unconstitutional enough that he is barring individuals from entering the country based on religious choice, but it would be even more horrendous if he was actually ignoring the judge’s stay.
Trump thinks that since he is president that he has the power to do whatever he wants by signing a piece of paper. We need to show him that our government does not work that way, and it is up to other elected officials to take a stand. I demand that Congress investigate whether or not Trump exceeded his authority by forcing his executive order despite the judge’s stay.
