Target: Orrin Hatch, Chairman, Senate Finance Committee
Goal: Block the confirmation of Representative Tom Price as Health and Human Services Secretary.
The pending confirmation of Rep. Tom Price for Secretary of Health and Human Services represents a clear and present danger to the future of healthcare in America. Over a long career as a private practice orthopedic surgeon, Georgia state legislator, and U.S. House representative, Rep. Price has frequently advocated foe his own financial best interests and is a strong proponent of massive cuts to Medicare/Medicaid.
One primary criticism voiced by Senate Democrats during Rep. Price’s confirmation hearings was a pattern of personal financial investments which aligned with proposed legislation benefiting those companies. A specific example involved the purchase of stock in an Australian biomedical company prior to shares being offered for sale to the public. Rep. Price maintained throughout the hearings that this was not in fact a “sweetheart” deal and those shares were available to all investors at the time of purchase. However, the Wall Street Journal received confirmation from company officials that Rep. Price had in fact purchased his shares at a discounted rate, on a tip from a fellow Congressman, appearing to call into question the validity of his testimony while under oath. In another instance, Price invested in a large medical equipment manufacturer and just a week later proposed a bill delaying regulations which would have had a negative financial impact on the company.
A second area of concern is the threat to public healthcare programs under a Price-led HHS. His proposed 2017 budget includes funding cuts of over $400 million to Medicare and $1 trillion to state Medicaid programs. This not only would remove critical resources from programs which together provide medical coverage for 129 million people, but would also contradict the campaign promise of President Trump that funding for those programs would be protected. Rep. Price declined to make the same pledge when pressed several times by Senator Elizabeth Warren during his confirmation hearing.
Rep. Price is clearly the wrong choice to lead the Department of Health and Human Services due to his dishonesty regarding financial conflicts of interest, and proposed cuts to vital programs which would have dire consequences for millions of our most vulnerable citizens. Please sign the below petition calling for Chairman Orrin Hatch to vote against Dr. Price for HHS Secretary.
Dear Chairman Hatch,
I am writing to implore you to vote against Rep. Tom Price for Health and Human Services Secretary. He is clearly the wrong choice to lead HHS due to his dishonesty while under oath regarding financial conflicts of interest and proposed cuts to Medicare and Medicaid.
The over 600,000 of your constituents who currently receive medical coverage through public health programs would be at risk under a Price administration. Please set an example for your Republican colleagues on the finance committee by voting against his nomination.
