Lift Cap On Refugee Applications

Target: Prime Minister Justin Trudeau

Goal: Lift the cap on private sponsorship of refugees and hire more staff to process applications.

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau took to Twitter on Saturday to state that refugees are welcome in Canada, contrasting his government’s policy with President Trump’s executive order indefinitely blocking asylum claims from Syrian refugees. However, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s government recently capped the number of private sponsorship applications for Syrian and Iraqi refugees at just 1000. The private sponsorship process, wherein charities, nonprofits and communities raise funds to sponsor individuals or families seeking asylum, has been responsible for over a third of the 39,000 Syrian refugees admitted to Canada since November 2015. Capping the number of applications will unquestionably result in Canada admitting fewer refugees. The cap amounts to trapping people outside of the country in refugee camps, or conflict zones.

Canada’s government claims that they capped the number of private applications due to a significant backlog. This backlog is itself due to the government hiring an insufficient amount of staff to process the applications. In short, the government is more willing to partially close the door on refugees than it is to allocate more resources to handle the number of people in need. Sign our petition and urge the Canadian government to lift its cap on private sponsorship applications and hire more staff to process applications.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Prime Minister Trudeau,

While I was pleased to see that you stand up for the rights of refugees and migrants on social media, I urge you to stand up for the rights of refugees in policy. The recently announced 1000 application cap for private sponsorship applications will amount to a dramatic reduction in the number of refugees admitted to Canada. As you may know, of the 39,000 refugees admitted to the country since November 2015, 13,700 entered via the private application process. As such, it is clear that this new cap will dramatically reduce the number of refugees admitted to Canada in the coming year.

While I understand that the stated reason for this cap is a backlog in the application processing system, the staffing levels and protocols that have caused this backlog are entirely within your control. Furthermore, considering the real danger and deprivation faced by refugees, this excuse amounts to stating that the Canadian government would prefer to let people suffer than to hire more staff to process these applications. I urge you to lift the cap on private sponsorship applications and expand the staff processing the applications. Only then will your rhetoric match your policy.

Sincerely,
