Targets: U.S. House Speaker Paul Ryan and Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell
Goal: Oppose Donald Trump’s ban on Muslim asylum seekers and immigrants traveling to the United States.
Donald Trump has signed an executive order banning refugees and citizens from seven predominantly Muslim nations: Syria, Iraq, Yemen, Iran, Sudan, Somalia, and Libya. Refugees will be banned entry for four months, except refugees from Syria, who will be banned indefinitely. All immigration from those nations will be banned for three months. This includes the entry of green card holders, visa holders, and men, women, and families already granted refugee status.
Nicknamed the “Muslim ban” because of its discrimination towards Muslims and its overt preference towards Christian refugees, this executive order is unconstitutional. In barring one religion from entry, this ban goes against the First Amendment’s Establishment Clause. This clause forbids the federal government from preferring one religion over another.
Currently, men and women en route to the United States are being illegally held by border patrol at airports, including JFK Airport. America was founded upon freedom of religion. It is a nation founded and filled by men and women fleeing persecution. This ban is not only unconstitutional, but it also goes against the very moral and ethical foundation of this country. Sign the petition to demand that the leaders of Congress uphold our nation’s Constitution and protect Muslims from blatant discrimination by opposing and overturning this ban.
Dear Speaker Ryan and Majority Leader McConnell,
On Holocaust Remembrance Day, the same day on which he released a statement vowing to never again let such evil take over our world, Donald Trump signed an executive order barring refugees and citizens from seven predominantly Muslim nations from entering our country. Refugees from war-torn Syria are banned indefinitely. Nearly 80 years after America turned away Jewish refugees, sending them back to Europe to their deaths in concentration camps, we seem to be repeating that dark moment in American history.
This “Muslim ban” enacted by Trump is unconstitutional. It violates our First Amendment, in which there is a clause that states no religion shall be discriminated against by the federal government. As the leaders of Congress, you should and must immediately disavow these actions by the president and make it clear that they are in blatant violation of the United States Constitution. We are a nation founded on the freedom of religion. We are a nation founded upon equal protection under the law. Under this new administration, we are a nation that seems to be losing its grip on right and wrong and love and hate. I demand that you push to overturn the unconstitutional Muslim Ban immediately.
