Protect 2.8 Million People From Polluted Tap Water

Target: Bernard Cazeneuve, Prime Minister of France

Goal: Force the French government to reform agricultural laws and provide clean water to citizens.

Nearly 3 million people in rural France are drinking polluted tap water, according to a new study done by French consumer group, UFC Que Choisir. The places most affected by the pollution are rural areas near large agricultural operations where the use of pesticides, nitrates and other fertilizers is rampant. The chemicals in the agricultural products run off into streams and rivers and eventually end up in our communities’ drinking water. Although this is a small percentage of French citizens, almost 3 million people is far too many to be at risk from this pollution.

While most of this pollution is coming from agricultural operations, a reported 3 percent of water pollution in France is also due to lead, nickel and copper from old pipes. The people of France and all countries deserve access to clean, safe water. For many people, the only way to get that water now is to buy it in bottles. The tap water in France in 65 percent cheaper than buying bottled water, so this can become a massive financial burden.

Ninety-six percent of France actually has no reason to worry about water pollution from large scale farming operations, but still one in five people do not trust their tap water in the country. France needs to look into its overall water quality and create new restrictions so their citizens are safe from pollution, even if it is just a fear. The possibility that pollutants and toxins could be in the water is more than enough reason to start to reform water practices. It also shows a past of poor water quality, and the future must be different. Sign this petition to urge the French government to protect their citizens and ensure agricultural practices do not effect the drinking water.

PETITON LETTER:

Dear Mr. Cazeneuve,

A recent report shows almost 3 million people living in France without access to clean water. The majority of those threatened by the toxins are in rural areas, where once clean, natural water is now polluted by large-scale agricultural operations and their chemical usage. Although this is a fairly low percent of your overall population, it is still a massive amount of people that are threatened.

This may seem like a necessary evil because the farms feed the whole population, but in this era that is just no longer the case. The ability to farm on large scale without polluting is very possible, it just takes a large amount of effort and money to do so successfully. What it would take to farm without harming this drinking water is worth it when it comes to the safety of your citizens.

Use your power to change agricultural laws. Make sure large-class farms are no longer polluting drinking water and threatening the people of France.

Sincerely,

  1. France has a responsibility to it’s citizens to provide good quality drinking water that is free of toxins.
