Target: Mark Rutte, Prime Minister of the Netherlands
Goal: Conduct a third party investigation regarding claims that police brutalized a black woman, and fire the officers if found guilty.
A black lawyer says that she was the victim of racially motivated police brutality, after being arrested over a minor traffic offense. The victim, Chaka Laguerre, who is a lawyer at the International Court of Justice in The Hague, stated that she was walking her bike across the street during a red light when police stopped her. Laguerre says the two male officers continued to attack her despite her explanation. “I kept explaining that I did not know that walking across the street was a crime, that I did not do anything wrong, and begged them to speak to the Court security.” The victim said she was on the verge of blacking out from the attack. She was put in the car and taken to a holding cell, then eventually released and ordered to pay a fine.
Laguerre fears that people of color will continue to experience racist attacks in The Hague. Police do not appear to be concerned about the possible attack. They denied Laguerre’s claims and said that they will be complaining to the International Court of Justice where the alleged victim works. Their response demonstrates a clear lack of accountability — police must take claims of this nature seriously. It seems only proper that an unbiased, third party investigation should take place to determine whether the police are guilty of the alleged racially motivated assault. Please add your signature to this petition demanding that such an investigation take place, and that the officers be fired indefinitely if guilty found of the accusations.
Dear Mr. Rutte,
Two male police officers allegedly attacked a black woman who was simply trying to walk her bike across the street. The victim, who is also a lawyer, was reportedly on the verge of blacking out as the officers continued to attack her, despite her explanation that she didn’t know she’d committed any crime.
The police denied the accusations, and said they would be filing a complaint at the court where the woman works as a lawyer. We’re appalled that police officers could behave in such a deplorable, hateful manner, yet it happens everyday. We demand that a thorough, third party investigation take place regarding this case of possible racial assault, and that the officers be fired if guilty.
