Target: Donald Trump, President of the United States
Goal: Save the nation’s biggest arts endowments from the Trump administration’s chopping block.
In order to save money, the Trump administration is considering the total elimination of both the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) and the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH). Trump believes that cutting these important programs would help slash the federal budget.
Trump hopes to cut spending by $10.5 trillion. However, these two organizations currently make up a mere fraction of the current federal budget. A significantly small amount of money is given to these organizations compared to other government agencies (only about .006 percent per year). These organizations were established by President Johnson as a means of protecting, promoting, and preserving diversity in the arts and American cultural heritage for generations to come.
If Trump truly wanted to decrease federal spending, perhaps he should consider decreasing the military budget (of which America’s is one of the largest in the world). If he truly wanted to cut spending, perhaps he could cut the salaries of the elected officials who have refused to do their jobs for the past eight years under an African American president. There are plenty of ways for Trump to cut the budget. Sacrificing the arts should not be one of them. Sign the petition to demand that Trump not eliminate the arts from our society.
Dear Mr. Trump,
Your administration has recently suggested it may eliminate the National Endowment for the Arts and the National Endowment for the Humanities in an effort to decrease our national budget. These programs actually take up a minuscule (.006 percent) portion of the national budget. To cut them entirely would never solve any financial problem this nation has.
For someone who claims “America First,” you’d only be destroying a major portion of American culture by eliminating the NEA and NEH. Instead of eliminating the arts, you should consider cutting the budget in other ways, such as cutting military spending or cutting salaries of elected officials. I demand that you protect the arts. To eliminate them would severely infringe upon Americans’ freedom of artistic expression.
