Justice for 63 Horses Allegedly Neglected

Target: Marcia Murdoch, Prosecuting Attorney for Fremont County, Colorado

Goal: Punish couple accused of starving horses to the fullest extent of the law.

Over 60 horses were recently seized from a ranch in Fremont County, Colorado. Authorities, including the Fremont County Sheriff’s Office, the Colorado Humane Society, and the Denver Dumb Friends League, allege that owners Penny and Manny Gingerich were cruel and abusive to the animals. The couple, who operate a horse leasing business, deny the claims.

The investigation started when a complaint from a neighbor accused the couple of not feeding or watering the animals. The neighbor went on to accuse the couple of starving and neglecting the horses in their care. According to rescue staff, many of the horses are skinny and need dental care and de-worming medication.

The Fremont County Sheriff’s Office has charged Mrs. Gingerich with 63 counts of animal cruelty. Gingerich will be made to pay $22,680 to cover the cost of caring for the horses for 30 days. If she doesn’t pay the fine, she will have no chance to regain ownership of the horses.

This alleged neglect has resulted in the suffering of dozens of horses and must not go unpunished. In order to ensure that more animals don’t suffer at the hands of these reportedly profit-focused business owners, it is imperative that they are punished harshly. Sign the petition below to ask that the maximum possible penalty is sought for anyone found guilty of neglecting these horses.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Mrs. Murdoch,

Over 60 horses were recently removed from a ranch in Fremont County. The horses were skinny and in need of dental care and de-worming, according to rescue staff. Neighbors say that the animals were not receiving proper food or water, and that the animals were neglected and treated cruelly. These claims have been denied by owners Penny and Manny Gingerich.

In order to deter these and other profit-focused businesses from mistreating animals, it is important that the courts take a tough stance against this alleged cruelty. We, the undersigned, ask that you seek the maximum possible penalty for anyone found guilty of the mistreatment and neglect of these animals.

Sincerely,
