Justice For Teacher Allegedly Fired For Attempting to Rehabilitate Problem Students

Target: Carmen Fariña, Chancellor of the New York City Department of Education

Goal: Justice for teacher fired by apparently corrupt school.

High school teacher David Kent was fired from his job, allegedly for daring to do the right thing and take a genuine interest in the well-being and futures of his students. Kent, who reported chronic student misbehavior, was accused of “making the school look bad.” The Bronx school that fired him was reported as “more interested in covering their own tails than in providing a tranquil learning environment for vulnerable students” by Kent, but even knowing how the system “chewed him up and spit him out,” he just wants his job back. The well-being of his students means more to him than revenge.

Teachers like Kent are vital in this day and age. A good education is important, not so students can become successful money-makers, but to teach them how to survive in today’s world. It is more than simply imparting names and dates and numbers, it is teaching them how to adapt to society and understand people.

David Kent not only deserves an apology, he deserves his job back. This man wanted nothing more than to help create a better world for students raised in a tough society, and people like that are especially important in today’s social and political climate. Sign this petition to demand Kent be reinstated as an educator.

Dear Chancellor Fariña,

Bronx Design and Construction Academy recently fired a dedicated teacher whose prime interest was providing a good education and learning environment for his students. He alleged that the school cared more about covering up the flaws in their system rather than the well-being of the students, and after being harshly scolded for years for pointing out said flaws, he was unceremoniously fired.

This is not acceptable. Teachers like Kent are sorely needed in today’s troubled social and political climate, and all Kent wanted to do was help his students thrive and survive in this climate. The school was wrong to fire him just to save their own hides, and Kent deserves an apology and the reinstatement of his job.

You must demand that Bronx Design and Construction Academy not only reinstate Kent’s job, but clean up their act and take an interest in their students’ well-being as Kent has done. Schools are supposed to educate, and Kent did not deserve to be punished for doing the right thing. Please aid Kent in receiving justice as well as his job back.

If he wants his job back, I think he should get it. However, he won’t be appreciated there, and, frankly, they don’t deserve him. Why not go somewhere else where he will be supported and appreciated instead?
