Target: Donald Trump, President of the United States
Goal: Amend the tax code that places a burden on married women, and begin efforts to mitigate the gendered wage gap.
Against all odds, including numerous protests and petitions and losing the popular vote in the election, Donald J. Trump has been sworn in as President of the United States. While this is certainly a painful time for countless Americans, it is also time to take action.
In his first 100 days in office, Trump can live up to his promise of improving the lives of America’s working class by reforming part of the individual tax code that contributes to the wage gap between men and women. The Dual-Earner Marriage Tax Penalty (DMTP) places an undue burden on dual-income households, effectively creating a disincentive for both partners to seek employment. This is especially harsh on low-income households, where it may be necessary for both to work just to make ends meet.
The new President must be held accountable for his vague promises to “make America great again” — not for corporations and the wealthy, but for hard-working lower and middle-class Americans. Demand that he work to end the wage gap by signing below.
Dear Mr. President,
You ran your presidential campaign on a foundation of promises that many Americans, even some who had previously supported you, now find empty and meaningless. If you wish to earn the trust and respect of the American people, you must show that you are capable of creating progress for all Americans, whether they voted for you or not.
You have the potential to make effective change for America’s hard-working women by taking steps to close the wage gap. Please work with the House and Senate to reform the Dual-Earner Marriage Tax Penalty, which is disproportionately detrimental to married, working women.
