Justice for Puppies Left to Die in the Cold

Target: Al Cox, Chief of Police, Plymouth, Michigan

Goal: Find and punish person responsible for the abandonment of 19 puppies.

Nineteen puppies are being cared for at a shelter after being found outside in a urine-soaked cardboard box. The 4-week-old pit bull terrier mix puppies were left to starve or freeze to death in the cold. Fortunately, they were found by a jogger, who took them into a local animal shelter. The jogger called the scene heartbreaking, as the puppies were climbing over each other trying to escape the box. Rescuers say that it appears the animals were from different litters.

According to Wendy Welch, communications director for the Humane Society of Huron Valley, the animals are doing well so far. All 19 of the animals have been placed in temporary foster homes. They will receive booster shots before being adopted to forever homes. So far, there has been a lot of public interest in adopting the dogs. Police are currently looking for the person responsible for this cruel abandonment, and PETA has offered a $5,000 reward for anyone who comes forward with information leading to the apprehension of the assailant.

Animal shelters make it easy for owners to surrender animals that they cannot or do not want to care for. The callous abandonment of these pups is a case of barbaric, deliberate, and unnecessary cruelty. Add your name to the petition below to ask authorities to do everything within their power to ensure that the person who left these puppies for dead is apprehended and punished.

Dear Mr. Cox,

Nineteen puppies were recently found in a urine-soaked cardboard box. The dogs were left by the roadside in the cold and were climbing all over each other in an attempt to escape. The 4-week-old pit bull terrier mix puppies, which appear to be from different litters, were left to either starve or freeze to death. Fortunately, they all survived and will be adopted out after receiving their shots.

This type of cruel abandonment is absolutely unacceptable, especially considering the willingness of nearby animal shelters to take in surrendered animals. It appears that this was a deliberate attempt to kill the animals, and this cruelty must not go unpunished. We, the undersigned, ask that you work diligently to apprehend and lay charges against the person responsible for this heinous crime.
