Protect Endangered Species From Republican Attack

Target: Rep. Rob Bishop, Chairman of the House Natural Resources Committee

Goal: Protect the Endangered Species Act and the living things that it was designed to save from extinction.

With a Republican-controlled Congress and White House, Republicans are rallying around calls to invalidate the Endangered Species Act and revoke protections for 1,600 plants and animals. The leader of this movement is the Chairman of the House Natural Resources Committee, who says the act has controlled land and blocked economic progress. It appears that Donald Trump, along with his cabinet, are supportive of these efforts to gut protections for endangered species. The Trump family, after all, are known exotic animal hunters.

Other Republicans agree, arguing that more of a focus should be placed on money in the logging and drilling industry instead of on endangered species. They would like to make it harder to classify species as endangered. Many Republicans are forgetting, or don’t care, that it was the Endangered Species Act that helped save great numbers of animals, including America’s emblematic bald eagle.

If Republicans have their way (something that will be simple with Donald Trump in the White House), our environment and the thousands of endangered species that call it home will suffer traumatically. These animals and their habitats must be protected. The planet is a shared home for living things, not a place that humans can strip bare of its resources for their own economic gain. Sign the petition to demand that Republicans don’t destroy protections for endangered species.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Representative Bishop,

You’ve expressed an interest in dismantling the Endangered Species Act, which currently protects 1,600 plant and animal species across the country. If you dismantle this act in favor of logging and drilling, you’ll be responsible for the extinction of an unimaginable number of living species.

What gives you the right to decide which animals can live and which can die? This planet is not our own to be exploited for your economic gain. It is a shared home and the only home you, myself, and millions of other living things have. Jobs can be regained. Money can be remade. The planet, however, cannot be reclaimed once it is lost. I ask that you and your Republicans protect, not disband, the Endangered Species Act.

Sincerely,
