Demand that Trump’s Secretary of Education Nominee Protect LGBTQ Students

Target: Betsy DeVos, Nominee for Secretary of Education under Donald Trump

Goal: Maintain protections for LGBTQ students put in place by President Obama.

Betsy DeVos, Donald Trump’s controversial nominee for Secretary of Education, has a troubling history with regards to LGBTQ rights. The conservative billionaire has opposed marriage equality, and her family has donated millions to anti-LGBTQ organizations — including groups that push “conversion therapy.” It is troubling, considering her potential position as education secretary, that DeVos has shown no interest in protecting young LGBTQ students in the nation’s schools.

In fact, she, Pence, and other members of Trump’s incoming administration have expressed interest in reverting all school control back to the states, dismantling any and all federal protections for LGBTQ students and others. Based on her religious zeal and her ties to conservative Christian groups that espouse anti-LGBTQ attitudes, it isn’t clear whether DeVos will be able to separate church and state in her new role.

DeVos must realize that, as a public servant, it is her duty to protect the rights of all students. If she asserts her agenda upon public schools and reverses federal protections, millions of students will be put in danger of discrimination. Sign the petition and let DeVos know that we will be watching her and holding her accountable for every action she takes. Let her know that we demand she protect LGBTQ students.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Mrs. DeVos,

If appointed as Donald Trump’s Secretary of Education, you will be responsible for the education and growth of millions of American students. This includes all students, even LGBTQ students — members of a community which you have historically undermined and opposed. If you become Secretary of Education, you must learn to separate church and state.

Under President Obama, the federal government spent eight years working to enact protections for LGBTQ students. Please do not rob these students of their protections and their right to feel safe in the classroom. I demand that you keep intact the federal government’s anti-discrimination laws and protections for LGBTQ students.

Sincerely,

you know nothing about education. i’ve been a special ed teacher when george w bush was president at the time and then i retired from teaching when obama was a president at the time. that is not fair to lgbts like myself who need education. i was homeschooling our kids. now i’m a retired special ed teacher. dont let students go crazy like i did!
