Protect Australia’s Waters from Illegal Whaling Practices

Target: Malcolm Turnbull, Prime Minister of Australia

Goal: Issue public statement criticizing Japan for violating whaling ban and send Australian vessels to patrol vulnerable whale territory.

Japan is causing an uproar after a supposed violation of the 2014 ban on Antarctic whaling implemented by the United Nations. Aerial photos released by the Sea Shepherds, an anti-whaling group that has been monitoring and interfering with Japan’s whaling activities, show what appears to be the body of a minke whale and several harpoons aboard a Japanese whaling ship. This alleged slaughter would be the first known whale killing Japan has committed since the UN whaling moratorium was established.

Although the whaling violation has drawn heavy criticism from Australia’s federal environment minister, the Australian government has failed to implement any sort of patrols or defenses to prevent illegal whaling in their own waters. It is time for Australia’s Prime Minister to take a firm stance against whaling and issue protection for the gentle giants living in Australia’s waters. Urge Prime Minister Turnbull to take action by signing below.

Dear Prime Minister Turnbull,

Japan has acted above international law by supposedly slaughtering a minke whale inside Australia’s Antarctic whale sanctuary. This is the first known violation of the whaling ban Japan has committed, and it will not be the last, unless the Australian government takes action to defend its waters.

Japan has shrugged off a $1 million fine for whaling in protected waters in the past. Pleas to the Japanese government to enforce the whaling ban have fallen on deaf ears. You must publicly condemn Japan’s activities and issue an anti-whaling patrol in Australia’s Antarctic sanctuary as soon as possible to demonstrate that Australia will not turn a blind eye to illegal whaling.

There’s no point in having a ban on whaling if it won’t be enforced. Australia needs to step up and take action to protect these whales.
