Target: James Comey, Director of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI)
Goal: Step down from FBI position due to alleged violations of policy.
Director of the FBI James Comey is under investigation by the Justice Department for his apparent breaches of DOJ and FBI policy during the U.S. 2016 presidential election. Months before the presidential election, he held a press conference to announce that his department would not recommend charges against Hillary Clinton for using a private email server while stating that her actions were “careless.” Then just 11 days before the election, he wrote a letter to Congress indicating that the email investigation had been reopened, which he was advised not to do by the Justice Department. Three days before the election, Comey wrote another letter saying that they found nothing, but many believe the damage had already been done.
With this in mind, it is not right for Comey to head the Trump-Russia probe while being under investigation himself for possibly aiding the Trump campaign. At the same time his department was disclosing damaging information about Clinton, it was also denying that the FBI was investigating Trump, which it had been doing. Comey also refused to sign a CIA assessment confirming that Russia intervened in the election, even though it is widely believed to be fact.
FBI directors rarely hold press conferences to comment on an investigation, and they are not supposed to tell anyone about an ongoing investigation into a political figure so close to an election. The Justice Department will decide whether or not Comey made the right considerations or if he violated basic policy with his actions. Regardless it is apparent that his alleged interest in electing Trump should disqualify him from having anything to do with the investigation. Please sign this petition to demand that Comey step down from his position as head of the FBI.
Dear Director Comey,
I am writing to ask that you step down from your position as Director of the FBI. You broke policy when you notified Congress about the Clinton emails you found on Anthony Weiner’s computer, and your refusal to sign a report and confirm that Russia interfered with the election leaves room for a lot of skepticism about your interest in electing Trump. Additionally as there is an investigation into your alleged involvement, you cannot be trusted to head the probe into Russia’s alleged ties with Trump’s campaign.
Senator Bernie Sanders has suggested that your resignation would be good for the American people while criticizing your actions during the election. I am writing because I agree. Please step down from your position as Director of the FBI.
