Stop Allowing Hunters to Kill Endangered Species

Target: President Barack Obama

Goal: Revoke federal policy that allows endangered animals to be shot and killed by hunters.

Hunters can kill endangered animals without consequence due to a legal loophole known as the McKittrick Policy. Hunters who kill an endangered animal and claim it was an “accident” and that they misidentified the animal cannot be punished, according to the Justice Department.

This policy is named after a hunter who, in 1995, shot and killed an endangered wolf in Yellowstone National Park. He claimed that he thought the wolf was a rabid dog. While the court did not believe him, the Justice Department did and enacted a policy to protect hunters like him. Since 1998, nearly 50 wolves in the state of New Mexico alone have been killed illegally. Many of the wolves were killed under the presumption or claim that they were dogs.

President Obama has the power to revoke this troubling policy and protect the nation’s endangered species. President Obama has always worked tirelessly to protect our environment. Ask that, as one of his final acts as president, he revoke this policy.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear President Obama,

I want to thank you for the acts you have taken over the last eight years to protect our environment. From national monuments to the Paris Agreement, you have shown that you believe the planet should be protected at all costs. If we don’t have a planet, we don’t have a home. I ask that you carry out one final act protecting our environment by revoking the troubling McKittrick Policy.

The policy was enacted by the Justice Department at the end of the last century. It protects hunters who claim to have “accidentally” killed endangered animals. Dozens of animals have been killed since this act was put into place. Many more are threatened. I ask that you use your presidential powers to revoke this act, holding hunters accountable for their actions and protecting our nation’s endangered species.

Sincerely,

  1. what a backward country you are becoming. Hunters are the scum of the earth killing poor innocent animals for the fun of it. How dare they take away these animals from the people of the world. These animals may soon be extinct and all so some rich thick gits can have fun taking a creatures life Hunting should be banned from everywhere forever and if found hunting hunters should be executed for killing creatures of the world.

    • NO POINT signing this….its addressed to President Obama, who will NOT be president after the 20th of this month.

The next four years will very likely see the END of many of the endangered animals now living on the brink of extinction.

  2. Linda Cummings says:

There should absolutely be no ‘accidental’ shooting of endangered species. If you are not sure what you are shooting at. you SHOULD NOT BE SHOOTING! You should not even be allowed to own a gun! For Gods sake this is the most basic 101 common sense.

  3. Brenda Denno says:

The U.S. and all countries should follow the lead of Costa Rica which has banned all hunting for sport. Hunting, including trophy hunting, is in my opinion a barbaric sport for sadistic people who make themselves feel good and feel important by killing an innocent animal. This McKittrick Policy is pathetic and allows hunters to murder these animals and then lie about it. Should be scrapped!

  4. The only good hunter is a dead one.Hunt the hunter!

  5. Anne Moeller Anne Moeller says:

Hunting is NOT a sport- it is cruel murder of all innocent animals- and should be band from all countries and the so called hunters should be the ones hunted with non violent protests. Anne Moeller

  6. MUST END THE KILLINGS OF WILDLIFE THE EARTH NEEDS TO OPERATE NOW.ALL YOU HUNTING TURDS NEED TO GO DIE NOW.
