Target: Daniel M. Ashe, Director of U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service
Goal: Protect endangered leatherback turtles from extinction.
Leatherback turtles are declining rapidly in number each day. Their eggs are a prized delicacy among humans and the favorite food of certain animals, fishermen capture them in dangerous driftnets, and the beaches on which they make their homes are being overtaken by hotels and tourists. Even laying a surplus of eggs is proving to be a poor defense mechanism, as these eggs are eaten by humans and other animals before they have a chance to hatch.
These poor creatures deserve better. Not only are turtles one of the oldest orders of reptiles on this planet, but leatherback turtles in particular feed on dangerous jellyfish that pose a potential threat to swimmers and other aquatic species. Their natural habitats must be protected, and fisheries must exercise more caution with their nets or use a less dangerous method of fishing.
The leatherback turtle will be gone completely from this planet if we do not act fast. Sign this petition to demand stronger protection of this species, including the cessation of rapid settlement building and safer fishing methods.
Dear Director Ashe,
Leatherback turtles are extremely vulnerable and in grave danger of becoming extinct due to careless fishing habits, the consumption of their eggs by humans and animals alike, and developers building settlements and resorts on their habitats.
You must help us save these creatures immediately. Developers must be instructed to build their resorts and other settlements elsewhere instead of robbing these turtles of their natural habitat. Fisheries must implement more careful methods and use more responsibility to prevent them from getting caught in driftnets, or possibly phasing out the use of driftnets for a less deadly method.
Do not let these creatures go extinct. No living creature deserves such a terrible fate.
