Stop Torturing Bulls at Annual Festival

Target: Homero Gamboa Martinez, municipal president of Tlacotalpan

Goal: End alleged abuse of bulls at the Fiesta de la Virgen de la Candelaria.

The city of Tlacotalpan in Mexico holds an annual festival where bulls are allegedly forced to drink liquor and are then chased down the street, lassoed, beaten, and stabbed. This year’s Fiesta de la Virgen de la Candelaria is scheduled to happen in February, despite the fact that the government of Veracruz, the state that Tlacotalpan is in, has put a ban on bull torture. The Mexican government eliminated funding for the Fiesta de la Virgen de la Candelaria this year, and Tlacotalpan is reportedly still 3 million pesos in debt from last year’s festival. Attendance was also reportedly down 30 percent in 2016. But despite all that, the government of Tlacotalpan is insisting on going ahead with this cruel event.

Witnesses have reported seeing horrific animal abuse at past festivals. A video captured by a festival attendee shows a bull being dragged by a rope around its neck. Bulls are also reportedly stabbed as they run through the street, and they’re allegedly beaten with bats. The bulls that survive this torture are reportedly put into pastures, where they are sometimes left to suffer with their injuries.

This cruel abuse of bulls needs to stop. Sign this petition to demand that the government of Tlacotalpan ends this horrific abuse of innocent animals.

Dear Mr. Martinez,

The animal abuse at the annual Fiesta de la Virgen de la Candelaria is horrifying and unnecessarily cruel. During this festival, bulls are allegedly forced to drink alcohol and are then sent into the street, where they’re reportedly beaten with bats, have bricks thrown at them, and have ropes lassoed around their necks. There have also been reports of the animals’ tails being cut off by drunk festivalgoers.

The Mexican government has reportedly ended funding of the Fiesta de la Virgen de la Candelaria over the bull abuse, forcing Tlacotalpan to bear the burden of the festival’s full cost. With attendance down and the city still in debt from last year’s festival, there is no reason to continue with the abusive spectacle this year.

This horrific abuse needs to come to an end. To save bulls from unimaginable pain, please enforce the Veracruz government’s ban on animal torture during this year’s Fiesta de la Virgen de la Candelaria.

I ask that this horrifying and sadistic abuse of bulls at this festival be permanently stopped. What kind of people would want to participate in this? What does this tell us about the people who are pushing for this event to happen? Anybody who enjoys torturing animals should be locked up. Please don’t let any more bulls be tortured by sadists!

  5. Wendy Morrison says:

Force men to drink liquor, let all the BULLS chase these stupid drunk men down the street, and then put thesee stupid drunk mend in a ring and let the bulls kill them! That is more humane than the other way around!!!!!!!

  6. “So many people insist they are against animal abuse, cruelty, suffering and the inhumane treatment of animals, yet they don’t understand they are actively engaging in and supporting egregious suffering, abuse, cruelty and inhumane treatment when they eat animals and their ‘by-products.’ If you are against cruelty, suffering and inhumane treatment, then you go vegan. It’s just that simple.” – Sarah Kiser

  7. Gene Sengstake says:

It’s hard to believe that so many sick/demented human beings (I hate to even give “them” that distinction) are actually walking on the face of the earth!!! Morality is obviously extinct in many parts of the world – as well as here in the US. It’s too bad that decent people can’t legally do something to put a stop to the perverted people and governments that allow/enable these perverted events to take place – – –

soviel krank im kopf muss man ausrotten

  12. Poor mother earth, poor animal and plant life
Prosecute and kill those goddamn animal killers who do not deserve to live
So much sick in the head you have to exterminate

  13. Georgina Burns says:

Menudo basura de gobierno, ayuntamiento y demas
instituciones permitir fiestas con tortura animal.
This is INHUMANE & shows that the majority of locals are uncivilized morons!

  14. Why are participants allowed to torture bulls during the Fiesta de la Virgen de la Candelaria in Tlacotalpan? Liquor is forced down the animals’ throats and then they are set loose on the streets. Participants chase the bulls with bats and knives and beat and stab the scared bulls. Hour after hour these bulls are tortured as residents throw bricks at them and kick and punch them and even cut off their ears. This is most sadistic!

I am asking that local and state officials please enforce the Veracruz governor’s ban of 2006 on this barbaric ritual. Also, let it be known that, until this is done, I will not visit Tlacotalpan nor Veracruz until sadistic events such as these are stopped.

  17. Exactly why we will never visit Mexico. The animal abuse is horrific, government cannot control their own people.

  18. May God have NO MERCY on abusers, spectators and those who permit this cruelty!
