Demand Sexual Assault Sensitivity Training for Police After Captain’s Ignorant Comments About Rape

Target: James P. O’Neill, New York Police Department Commissioner

Goal: Require more extensive sexual assault training and education for police officers after a captain implied that some kinds of rape are taken less seriously.

An NYPD captain made comments about a rise in rapes and attempted rapes by saying acquaintance rapes, including those from Tinder or other dating apps, are “not a trend” that the police department is “too worried about” and that “true stranger rape[s]…are the troubling ones.” Seven out of 10 rapes are committed by someone the survivor knows. Police officers, especially captains, must understand rape and sexual assault better in order to combat these growing problems. Demand this department receive extra sexual assault education in order to fight this ignorant mindset.

Captain Peter R. Rose, commanding officer of the NYPD’s 94th precinct, was discussing a rise in rapes and attempted rapes in Brooklyn and explained that many of these cases were from hookup sites and even coworkers. He essentially said that these kinds of rapes are not as bad as “total abomination rapes where strangers are being dragged off the streets.”

An officer with this kind of influence sends a message to other officers with his mindset and words. This pattern of thought can affect the way acquaintance rape cases are handled since the rapists are deemed normal guys and not random monsters on the street. When most rapes are acquaintance rapes, this myth just creates a cycle of injustice.

Demand the NYPD works to end this myth and the injustices that accompany it by administering extensive sexual assault and rape training to its officers.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Commissioner O’Neill,

One of your captains was recently quoted essentially saying that rapes from dating sites aren’t as bad as rapes by complete strangers, going on to say that these types of rape are not a concern for the police department. Considering that in seven out of 10 rape cases, the rapist is an acquaintance, the belief perpetuated by this captain is ignorant and dangerous.

Your officers must better comprehend rape and sexual assault to best combat it. I demand you enforce extensive rape and sexual assault training and education for all of your officers.

Sincerely,

A close relative of mine reported a date rape to the police and it was completely ignored – not even investigated at all. Their attitude on this issue is absolutely disgusting and inexcusable.
