Target: Lars Løkke Rasmussen, Prime Minister of Denmark
Goal: Applaud the move to recognize trans people as normal by declassifying being transgender as a mental illness.
Ahead of the World Health Organization (WHO), the Danish government has moved to no longer classify trans people as mentally ill. Denmark is the first country to do so. Applaud Denmark for ditching this stigmatizing and inaccurate classification.
The WHO’s International Classification of Diseases (ICD) classifies trans people as being mentally ill and having a “Psychological and Behavioral Disorder.” Getting rid of this ignorant classification was proposed and accepted in 2014 but won’t take take effect until 2018.
A recent WHO study found that “the conceptualization of transgender identity as a mental disorder has contributed to precarious legal status, human rights violations, and barriers to appropriate health care among transgender people.”
Rather than wait for WHO to make the change, the Danish government declared that if WHO did not declassify being trans as a mental illness within months, Denmark would do so itself. The country has now followed through on its promise.
Applaud Denmark for making this positive move for trans people and encourage the country to continue supporting the trans community.
Dear Prime Minister Løkke,
Trans people face enormous societal stigma and discrimination, as shown by the World Health Organization’s classification that being transgender means someone is mentally ill. Between murders and suicides, trans people are some of the most vulnerable among us.
That is why I am writing to praise Denmark for moving ahead of WHO and declassifying trans people as having a mental illness. I hope that you continue to fight for trans rights and stand with the trans community.
